Measure What Matters

Dave Ferguson
Watch Bible Studies on RightNow Media
Dave Ferguson, author, pastor, and president of Exponential, explains how identifying and measuring the most important elements of ministry will lead to flourishing in three key areas of ministry.

Which scoreboard are you using to measure your ministry success?

We want our lives and ministries to serve God well. As a pastor, your mind is full of tasks, goals, and concerns that need attention. It’s easy to lose sight of why you are leading a church and forget the core values, actions, and attitudes that make your church successful.

We want our lives and ministries to serve God well. As a pastor, your mind is full of tasks, goals, and concerns that need attention. It’s easy to lose sight of why you are leading a church and forget the core values, actions, and attitudes that make your church successful.

You need a way to cut through the clutter of information and busyness so you can evaluate both yourself and your church. Not all data is critical, so how do you know which information belongs on your pastoral “scoreboard”? Measuring what truly matters will refocus you on the mission Jesus gave the church.

Are we measuring our progress in the things that actually reflect our mission? Dave says we need a scoreboard. He explains why keeping track of the right information will help churches achieve their overall goal of spreading the gospel and making disciples.

Dave discusses the one characteristic that matters for leaders. Then he offers us a framework that includes four areas that impact our ability to be healthy disciple-makers. When these areas are healthy, we can flourish as leaders.

If our goal is to minister effectively, we must learn to measure how well our methods are working. Dave explains that when we measure what’s actually important in church, our mission of multiplication can move beyond our walls into our communities and out to the world.

To effect real change, we must look outward to the community we serve, take the pulse of its needs, and harness the collective power of the churches that serve nearby. Dave argues the more we collaborate, the more effective our efforts will be to transform our cities.

Dave reviews the importance of knowing what truly matters in our ministries. We can track and measure many bits of information, but the ones that will help us most are those that measure our faithfulness to God’s call.
