Developing a Ministry Strategy

Eric Geiger
Watch Bible Studies on RightNow Media
In this five-session course, pastor and author Eric Geiger guides you through a practical process of designing a strategy to help your church focus on its mission.

Does your church have a plan?

It’s one thing to know our mission as a church, but it is another thing to know how to accomplish that mission. Church ministries try to meet people’s needs and lead them to grow in their faith. But sometimes our weekly calendars feel like a random list of activities instead of an intentional strategy for ministry. We need a plan and a way to evaluate our ministry efforts.

How can we develop a strategy to accomplish what God has called us to do? A purposeful approach to ministry will make our work more effective as we seek to fulfill our mission as the church. If we follow the Spirit’s guidance, making a plan for our church is wisdom in action.

The challenges of managing the daily life of the church can sometimes distract us from our core purpose. It’s one thing to know our mission as a church, but it is another thing to know how to accomplish that mission. Eric Geiger describes what a ministry strategy is, how it isn’t “less spiritual,” and why we need one.

Eric unpacks what it looks like to design a ministry strategy that focuses on what truly matters. The simpler the strategy, the more effective. The first step helps us decide what kind of disciples we want to make before we create a strategy for making them.

We want to build a discipleship process in which programs’ activities and goals help move believers further along the path toward spiritual maturity and wholeness. Eric Geiger offers six steps to his blueprint for building programs that make disciples.

Eric Geiger helps us consider two aspects of shepherding. To effectively shepherd our church, we need intentional processes at important milestone moments in people’s faith journey.

Eric encourages us to become strategic thinkers—leaders who can steward the church’s resources wisely. Thinking strategically is not the antithesis of being led by the Spirit. Strategic thinking is Spirit-led wisdom in action.
